Coronavirus (COVID-19) Updates

The coronavirus (COVID-19) originated in Wuhan, China, was declared a public health emergency of international importance by the World Health Organization (WHO), and it was categorized as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Due to this situation, and in compliance with the normative letter No. CN-2020-265-D of the Office of the Insurance Commissioner of Puerto Rico (“OCS”), Pan-American Life Insurance Company of Puerto Rico (PALIG-PR) will provide coverage for the treatment of COVID-19, as follows:

Screening tests: According to the ordered medical criteria and subject to the terms on deductible, copayment or coinsurance applicable to your health plan coverage.

Hospital and emergency services: They will be provided free of pre-authorization requirements, referrals or any other prior service determination procedure, subject to the terms on deductible, copayment or coinsurance applicable to your health plan coverage.

Immunization: Although there is currently no vaccine available for COVID-19, once there is an immunization service recommended by the “Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” (CDC), PALIC-PR will provide coverage free from copays, coinsurance or deductible applicable to our policyholders.

Medications: We will waive the requirement of pre-authorizations or staggered treatment when, for medical reasons, a non-covered medication is recommended to treat any health condition associated with COVID-19, subject to the terms on deductible, copayment or coinsurance applicable to your medical plan coverage.

Our parent company, Pan-American Life Insurance Group (“PALIG”), is continuously monitoring the severity and progression of the disease caused by COVID-19.

Taking into account the magnitude of the risk that the development of this disease has generated, and in order to support the needs of our policyholders in the more than 22 countries where we serve, we are considering all the guidelines and protocols issued by international organizations and by the Secretary of the Department of Health.

The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends, among other things, the following general prevention measures that we all must follow to reduce the exposure and spread of the disease:

Wash your hands frequently, using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, or soap and water.

When coughing and/or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with your arm or a disposable tissue - then immediately discard the tissue and wash your hands.

Avoid close contact with anyone who has a fever and/or cough.

If you have a fever, cough, and/or shortness of breath, seek medical attention immediately and share your previous travel history with your health care provider.

When visiting places, or areas that are currently experiencing new coronavirus cases, avoid direct (unprotected) contact with animals and surfaces that have been in contact with animals.
